During these obstructed, frozen times, our cine-discourse is a dialogue between screens. After years of public screenings that led to encounters and exchanges, during this period of time where we wait for our bodies to awaken, it feels that human contact is becoming more and more telepathic; we channel our feelings and our experiences between one another at a distance. While acknowledging our permanent quest we continue to move and look for movements, we attempt to disengage ourselves from the known world in order to venture into the great sea and to be shipwrecked. These images will survive us, beyond and within every imposition, every system, every era, every eye.

In this infinite net, far out of the theaters’ darkness, lost in the light of distant rooms and in front of an invisible audience, branched out in every part of the world, we present a new kaleidoscopic research that aims to reframe practices and works that broke their respective frames – reflecting on the development of cinema as an art form, today, in 2021.

In the game of cinema that we’re now playing with LABA, which we dedicate to the beginning of what’s about to happen, we are going to experiment with new practices: interweaving workshops, pedagogy and exhibitions, dozens of films and videos to dissect, links to click on and to jump on, texts to listen to, images to save, read, paste, and exchange.

Nomadica continues to expand research and action, unveil new concepts, generate critical thinking, and defend and spread – in a practice that is ecological, autonomous, and of clear opposition – unpublished and rare looks and methods.

From April 21

Una (Posible) Vuelta Al Mundo En Super 8
Elena Duque and Ángel Rueda, programmers of (S8) Mostra de Cinema Periférico (Spain), one of the most vital events in the field of avant-garde cinema, take us on a trip around the world with the Super 8 format, through the words and films of Claudio Caldini, Helga Fanderl, Teruo Koike, Saul Levine.

Screen Glare
Enrico Camporesi works at the Film Collection of the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Screen Glare traces the effects of the pandemic on the viewing of films and moving images in an unusual place: the monitor. Featuring films by: Morgan Fisher, Peter Miller, Mary Helena Clark.

Macchina Infinita
During a workshop, the LABA students together with Giulia Mazzone and Giuseppe Spina discover the collection of cinema machines kept by the Museo dell’Industria del Lavoro in Brescia. This visit becomes the leitmotif of a series of thoughts on technological development and on the imaginary of the infinite machine.

From April 28

Beyond Quiet
Joseph Bernard is an American visual artist. Beyond Quiet is an autobiographical video essay on painting, photography and Super-8 film. The project features an unreleased film, Sun Song, made in 1979 and never screened, followed by a selection of ten short films.

The Cinema We Need (Reprise)
How to create a truly authentic cinema? Taking as a starting point the classic text The Cinema We Need by Canadian filmmaker and philosopher Bruce Elder, Riccardo Re creates a reprised version of it, fluidly reworking Elder’s complex critical thinking.
The video essay is introduced by an excerpt from the work-in-progress film Alone (All Flesh Shall See It Together), and accompanied by the 1982 film Illuminated Texts, both by Elder himself.

From May 5

Memorandum (Fotografie, Frame, File)
Memorandum (photographs, frames, files). What does a film become when posted on UbuWeb? Rinaldo Censi, programmer and professor at the Accademia di Bologna, proposes a personal analysis of the giant web archive founded in 1996 by poet and artist Kenneth Goldsmith.

Fera Ancestral
Portuguese artist and curator Sílvia das Fadas is working on a film-essay on the concept of sabotage as a form of safeguarding the planet. Waiting for us to be able to physically screen the film in 16mm, she tells us about her research inside a forest. Featuring films by Marwa Arsanios, Mikhail Lylov, Elke Marhöfer, Brigid McCaffrey, Luísa Homem.

From May 12

Collage
Pedagogical film project on collage as a cognitive act in artist’s cinema. But the film drifts, and 35mm photographs taken by the artist over the last fifteen years meet a text written by Baptiste Jopeck and the voice of Margaux Guillemard. Followed by a three-film program curated by Stefano Miraglia and Baptiste Jopeck, including the Italian premiere of Mary Helena Clark‘s latest work, Figure Minus Fact.

Dar La Vuelta Al Cuadro
Francisco Algarín Navarro and Carlos Saldaña identify in French filmmaker Jean-Claude Rousseau’s first film (Jeune femme à sa fenêtre lisant une lettre) the genesis of his entire poetics, which, starting from the peculiarities of Super 8 film, develops into a lively and complex creative process.

From May 19

The Rendered Earth
An in-depth look at the work of Danish artist, filmmaker and programmer Tinne Zenner, focusing on her personal approach to field research in her cinema, where “time, history and political aspects are embedded in physical structures” between visual information and abstraction. The Rendered Earth consists of a retrospective, a translation into English and Italian of a text by Martin Grennberger, and a dialogue between Tinne Zenner and Stefano Miraglia.

Cruising The Public Domain
With his project Cruising the Public Domain, critic and programmer Tommaso Isabella traces the work of American artist William E. Jones, whose investigation on the margins and gaps of visual documentation crosses cinema, photography, graphics and writing, always seeking a sensual confrontation with History, through a materialistic interrogation of recording media.
