Mono No Aware: Call For Entries
    Submissions Due November 7th 2009

You are welcome to submit. MONO NO AWARE is open to any person or group of persons making work incorporating Super8 or 16mm film format as part of that presentation. For example: blending film & theater performance, musicians creating a visual experience for their sound, & experimental filmmakers working with story tellers. Entries will only be accepted on Super8 or 16mm film. FILM ONLY. No Digital Video.

Part of our purpose in having this gathering is to put an emphasis on the cinematic experience. Film & video are so easily accessible, you can watch something on a website, television, a home projector, or even your cell phone. For some filmmakers those vehicles are copies of the original artwork, each one degraded by its format. We believe there is a magic in seeing the film as a print. There is a presence a poet has reading his/her own writing. There is a feeling that resonates in your chest when you see a band live. For these reasons we are encouraging live music, performance, and audio to expand the cinematic experience beyond the screen. We ask that in the spirit of the festival you not video or create copies of your performance. Some participants have gone as far as to destroy the work after its first run at the event.

Embrace the film medium. Cut & splice found footage you picked up at a yard sale. Take all your unused footage from an old project and create something new with the unused scenes. Spend 50 bucks to shoot & process 100 feet of 16mm & make a 3 minute masterpiece with a friend's Bolex. Paint on the film surface. Go on eBay and pick up a dozen old reels for ten bucks. Run 10 projectors at once on a single screen. Splice, dice, paste, shoot, and do it all over again. Create visual poetry, colorful abstractions, a comedic narrative, a cinematic comet that will light up the space for several minutes and live in the minds of those there to see it in its pure state. While it's there, fill the audience's ears with a score nothing short of sonorous.

The Strange Beauty Film Festival is looking for striking short movies (30 minutes or less) that walk the line between terrifying normality and sublime fever dream. We want movies that will draw us back into the mysterious, awkward, achingly tender world that keeps getting covered over.

Strange Beauty accepts works of any shape or form with running times of 30 minutes or less. The only requirement is that the work be strangely beautiful and/or beautifully strange. We are looking for stuff that strikes a chord, has an emotional impact, makes us think. If you feel your movie fits the bill, it probably does. We can't wait to see it.

All genres, subject matter, and styles encouraged.

    Museek Music Video Festival

The Second International Music Video Festival MUSEEK [which became the first ever event of such kind in Russia] organized by Tour de Film and Loud Media comes back after a successful premiere season. 2008 brought us a vast number of things to remember: lots of great films, hundreds of entries from filmmakers like Marie Losier, Jodie Mack, Clay Lipsky, Keith Schofield and Markus Wambsganss; stunning programs which included retrospective of works by Michel Gondry, a documentary on Sonic Youth, reels from our friends moves [Manchester / UK] and International Short Film Festival in Lille [Lille / France]; still on going tour which already brought the festival to over ten Russian cities, Austria and France with USA, Germany, UK and Switzerland to come; fantastic reviews, competent jury and happy audience. But what 2009 will bring us?

This year we are going to make it all even bigger: live audiovisual shows, concerts, DJs, specials, curated programs and films of all kinds; greater festival’s invasion in Saint-Petersburg and extended tour network. And to make our ideas come true — we need your help and support. We are not asking for money — we’d rather get your terrific works submitted, fantastic ideas, curated programs, propositions for cooperation and advises.
We are open to all works show the interaction of video and audio, films that challenge popular and commercial model of music video. No matter where, how, for whom and when you’ve made it. If it’s really interesting — we’ll screen it. Challenge your fate and try to take the place of Andre Maat & Henk Loorbach [our last year’s winners] and win our prizes which will be decided soon.

We are waiting for your works till September 1st.

  • CSIF - Urbanity

    By on

    Urbanity (deadline June 30, 2009)
As part of a collaborative exhibition with Truck Gallery, the CSIF invites media arts submissions based on the theme of Urbanity.  This project is intended to explore the facets of the city – as you define it.  In keeping with our mandate, works submitted should use celluloid in either the production or post production stage – Super 8, 16mm or 35mm. This is an international call, open to any media artist working with film and urban themes.

This project coincides with a residency in Truck Gallery’s TR:AFICC (Temporary Residents; Artists For Innovative Contemporary Culture) Project – where an artist literally labors in the urban environment and their studio is the epitome of urban life: the vehicle.  The Camper (and the resident artist it encloses) will travel Calgary for the month of September, creating film-based work.  CSIF and Truck will host weekly screenings during that month, with a selection of works from this call.  Each night of screenings will take place in a different suburban location around the city and incorporate the guerilla, outdoor screening nature of the camper with the essence of this themed call.  Join us in exploring our city, your city and everything in between.

    Eligibility

    - Media artworks with some use of celluloid (8mm, Super 8mm, 16mm, 35mm)
    - Under 30min in length
    - Incorporate the theme of Urbanity in some way.

Please find Submissions forms at www.csif.org

To submit, send a DVD preview (NTSC, DVD Region 1 format) and completed submission form to the CSIF
before the deadline of June 30, 2009. Label the DVD clearly with the title, name of filmmaker and running time. No
entry fee is required, but the DVD will not be returned unless you enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope.

Call For Entries – 16th Chicago Underground Film Festival
    Chicago, Illinois - USA
    September 10 - 13 2009
at the Gene Siskel Film Center

The 16th Annual CHICAGO UNDERGROUND FILM FESTIVAL (CUFF), one of Chicago's leading film events, and a must-attend festival for cutting-edge filmmakers with defiantly independent visions.

Entry forms and guidelines available at http://www.cuff.org

CUFF stands out on the festival circuit for having a unique programming niche, and garnering a following among hipsters, media, and industry alike. Each year, CUFF presents an accessible, savvy program of film and video exploring the many definitions and interpretations of the "underground" concept. Selected films often ignore limitations of genre, and are made with passion and drive; formal experimentation, alternative music films, political agitprop,  and high camp are not uncommon elements of the Festival program.

Past CUFF films, producers, and filmmakers have received honors and offers as a direct result of exposure gained and connections made at the Festival. Feature programming highlights from years past include premieres of NICE BOMBS, DANIELSON: A FAMILY MOVIE, Oscar-nominated documentary THE WEATHER UNDERGROUND, THE JUCHE IDEA, THE MONKS - THE TRANSATLANTIC FEEDBACK, and BLOOD CAR.

    DEADLINES
    May 15 2009 - Regular Deadline
    June 15 2009 – Final Deadline

    MORE ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
CUFF is a great time for attendees, filmmakers, and industry. Daily screenings are followed by a great night of parties, events and concerts. In Roger Ebert's words, "What you get for your money is not just admission to the films but admission to a subculture."
