Avant-Noir is an irregular film programme curated by Greg de Cuir Jr that surveys recent work by African and African diaspora film and video artists, alongside those engaging with African cultures. It is rare that we see Black bodies on screens at film festivals and exhibitions, perhaps even rarer when Black artists create those images.

    Curated by Amanda VanValkenburg

This screening is curated around work that examines how technology affects sense of place and sense of self. Relationships to location becomes abstracted through the mediation of devices. The internet creates familiar landing sites, social media pages become extensions of identity, and google maps can be used to explore topographically accurate recreations of locations around the world. Sense of place is an abstraction of location navigated by information, senses, and physical stimulus

A Trio of Films That Examines Play
Featuring the work of Stacey Steers, Charlotte Pryce, and Gina Kamestky
    Guest Curator:  Laura Heit

A trio of films that carefully examines play; by reconfiguring, and relocating once discarded images, building layers, and creating new meaning. A hockey game is replayed using erasure and a lyrical hand painted line to examine the beauty and rhythm in this bloody sport. Another buries generations’ past evening entertainment in the garden and unearths new complex stories for bedtime. Colors unlike anything we relate to dirt, sublime in their secret history.

  • Birgit Hein x 3

    By on

As a filmmaker, curator, author and teacher, Birgit Hein is one of the most important names of the German experimental film. From the late 1960s to the late 1970s, with her then husband Wilhelm Hein, she made some of the most radical works within the so-called structuralist-materialist tradition, in which the film's illusory qualities were rejected and a study of its materiality was instead put in focus.
