Los Angeles Filmforum and The University Art Museum present - David Lamelas: Screening of Three Films

In Person: David Lamelas

David Lamelas began working in film in the late 1960s while living in London. Subsequently he created films in continental Europe, the United States, and Argentina. Place plays an integral role in his film work, as do the phenomenological experiences of time, space, and narrative. The University Art Museum presents three films by David Lamelas, including a rare 16 mm screening of Film 18 Paris IV 70 (People and Time-Paris), made with artist Daniel Buren, journalist Raúl Escari, and filmmaker Pierre Grinberg for the conceptual exhibition 18 Paris IV.70, curated by Michel Claura and Seth Siegelaub.

From the 1920s on one can locate a fascinating, global convergence of avant-garde anthropology and experimental cinemas. In Latin America, this has often resulted in the manufacturing of social utopias and calls for radical figurations of the New Man, often by blurring nationalist and cosmopolitan fantasies dreamt up between Old and New Worlds. Chilean exile film artist and theorist Raúl Ruiz belongs uneasily and dissonantly to this tradition.

Durante un corto periodo de tiempo en los años 70, el cineasta Bruce Wood, entonces viviendo en Chicago, filmó varias películas abstractas asombrosas filmadas en un blanco y negro intenso y maravilloso. Y entonces paró; no es una historia rara. Durante los últimos años ha crecido la atención por cineastas regionales "olvidados' por todo el país, y Chicago no ha sido una excepción. Gemas ocultas están siendo redescuviertas para volver a brillar años después de su nacimiento.

Con reminiscencias de Georges Méliès, Chaplin, las vanguardias rusas y la Bauhaus, y con cierto aire futurista, sus películas son misteriosos paisajes mentales que desarrollan cuentos casi mitológicos acerca de un hombre que habita un mundo extraño y solitario.

This month DIM Cinema arranges a series of studio visits, beginning with Jem Cohen’s short portrait of the sculptor Ann Truitt (1921-2004) and ending with the ceremonial liberation of Jay DeFeo’s painting The White Rose, weighing over 2,300 pounds, from her second-floor studio in San Francisco. In between, and in their respective studios, Sarah Pucill plays with the blinds, Bruce Nauman walks in an exaggerated manner, and Ken Jacobs goes psychological-psychedelic.

The screening is programmed around the work of two artists who interweave phenomenological bodies and cosmic dimensions with a resolutely post-digital approach. Both draw their images and sounds from nature while combining them with non-realist post-production techniques. From these methods emerge image flows and acoustic rhythms that take the viewer to other worlds. The films screened were chosen so that this cosmic dimension in the interaction of visions of human and non-human bodies alongside those of affective nature becomes readily apparent.

Joanna Margaret Paul (1955-2003) fue una artista neozelandesa que fue pionera en la práctica interdisciplinaria, trabajando prolíficamente a través de los medios de cine, poesía y pintura. A menudo filmado y editado en cámara, su trabajo cinematográfico narra la maternidad y la vida doméstica (Task, Napkins), las huellas gastadas del asentamiento urbano (Port Chalmers Cycle) y la presencia persistente del mundo natural. Otras obras como Sisterhood retrataron la vida de otras artistas femeninas identificadas con el movimiento de mujeres de los años 70 en Nueva Zelanda.
