CINE-REBIS, The London Undergrund Film Festival

CINE-REBIS (The London & Porto Underground Film Festivals) is a film festival that celebrates the art of cinema. Showing a selection of short and feature-length films from around the globe, our aim is to show work that expresses originality and creativity and that is truly independent in form, content and spirit. We are interested in films that challenge, expand and explore what cinema is, and could be.

We have lots of exciting films lined up for you this year, including some special events like an evening of poetry and films by the great British artist Jeff Keen, hosted by his daughter and collaborator Stella Keen, a screening and discussion of It Is Not the Homosexual Who Is Perverse But the Society in Which He Lives, presented by One+One Filmmakers Journal, a talk about Jonas Mekas’ first visit to England and the relationships between British and American underground film in the 60′s by William Fowler from the BFI, and an evening of insane and unrestrained trash movies with American filmmaker Kelly Hughes, who will be joining us to present two films, La Cage Aux Zombies: Director’s Cut and Heart Attack!. Alongside all of this, we have a selection of exciting, new shorts and features selected from this year’s submissions plus lots more!

The London & Porto Underground Film Festivals celebrate the underground, experimental and outsider works of cinema. Our aim is to show work that expresses originality and creativity and that is truly independent in form, content and spirit. We are interested in films that challenge, expand and explore what cinema is, and could be. We are open to submissions of all kinds, both narrative and non-narrative, genre and genreless. We only ask that they are original and creative.

This year, the London Underground Film Festival will take place from 14th to 17th November at The Horse Hospital, as usual. We are also very excited to announce that we’ll be starting a sister festival in Porto, Portugal, that will take place early 2014.

You are free to submit films of any type to the festival, we have no restrictions on genre, style or length.

We are looking for short and feature length films that are non-commercial and non-mainstream. Our concern is to show films from those unique corners of cinema that would normally be ignored or rejected by the commercially driven cinemas. We are interested in the art of cinema, how film can experiment with form and challenge our ideas of what a film is and could be. We specifically seek work that is experimental, poetic, original, underground and unique. We want to show films that will excite, challenge, surprise and enthrall people and give them a cinematic experiment that they won’t forget. We look forward to seeing your film!

As part of the London Underground Film Festival, Duncan Reekie will present and perform a selection of work including early Super 8 films, recent digital video and the world premiere of a new performance. Duncan Reekie has been a malign influence on British Underground Cinema for over twenty years. He has produced a diverse body of work that explores a variety of styles, techniques and purpose including narrative drama, scratching and colouring celluloid, multiple superimpositions, video collage and lyrical visions. Reekie has developed a mongrel praxis that refuses the institutional separation between theory and practice. It is subjective and chaotic, it is enmeshed in a complex system of political contingencies : he is an agent in the narrative. He is perhaps most celebrated for his performance work which features projected images and scathing rhetoric which is often mistaken for irony. He is a founder member of the infamous Exploding Cinema Collective, a radical open access-screening group and he was the co-ordinator, producer and co-director of the international Underground feature film MALDOROR (2001) that has toured extensively throughout Europe and America. His highly acclaimed book ‘Subversion: The Definitive History of Underground Cinema’ was published by Wallflower Press in October 2007.
