In October, we are pleased to present films by the Algerian-French filmmaker Frédérique Devaux. Her documentaries and experimental films have been screened in many parts of the world and are part of the collections of various museums and cinematheques. Since 2000, she has been responsible, together with Michel Amarger, for Cinexperimentaux, a series about experimental filmmakers. Their feature film, Cinemas de traverse, about the history of experimental film, was released in 2010. Frédérique Devaux is also a university lecturer. She has taught at the Universities of Paris I Sorbonne, Paris VII, and at the famous Louis Lumière film school.
Frédérique Devaux’s experimental films take a very playful approach to the medium. The ideas of the Lettrists, especially Maurice Lemaître have been a strong influence on her approach; words, letters, and signs play an essential role in her work. Another significant influence on her work is cinéma corporel, a body-oriented cinema developed in France in the 1980s. Her commitment to the rights of Imazigh (Kabyle sometimes also referred to Berber) women in Algeria is also important to her work. Frédérique Devaux makes use of various techniques, ranging from found footage to scratching and perforating the film material itself.
