Space Cell

Handmade Film Lab Space Cell, Seoul, South Korea

Space Cell opened in July 2004 in Samcheong-dong, Seoul, with the first experimental film workshop. Inaugurated as a cultural complex for exhibitions, screenings, and education programs, Space Cell organized workshops in summer and fall and presented exhibitions in spring and fall. At the same time, it served as a screening venue for the Experimental Film & Video Festival in Seoul (EXiS). In September 2006, Space Cell transformed itself into a ‘handmade film lab.’ Since then, artists started working regularly at the venue. In addition to the annual workshops, Space Cell organizes independent screenings. In 2007, it also launched an in-depth workshop. Currently, works produced in the workshop are screened at the lab program section at EXiS. In its new location in Shinyong-dong, Seoul, Space Cell is expanding its activities to education through experimental film workshops, experimental film screenings, lab-based experimental film practices, collaborative projects, and distribution.
