Palm Down | Amy Halpern | 2012 | 16mm | 6 minutes | COLOR | SILENT "Two palindromes. One resurrection. No happy ending." - Amy Halpern
Water and Power | Pat O'Neill | 1989 | 16mm | 54 minutes | COLOR | SOUND "Much of the film was shot in the Owens Valley and in an old office building in downtown LA and is metaphorically about the exchange of energy between two places. It is also about water, in all of its states, and about cyclical motion: the planets, the tides, the implied rotation of the camera on its axis, and the repetitive actions of the performers." - Pat O'Neill.
Deering Estate presents Tropes and Techniques: Films by Amy Halpern and Pat O'Neill in collaboration with Moving Image Alliance, a Knight Foundation-invested studio project by artist Barron Sherer, founded to create a climate for appreciation and production of contemporary moving image art based on legacy cinema practices and technologies. Sherer's project collaborates with media artists, galleries, and institutions through advocacy, instruction, and public performance.
