IMAGE MAKING FATIGUE AN ARTIST TALK BY ROBERT SEIDEL

Thursday, March 21st, 8 pm, 2024 Admission: Free *RSVPs are recommended Language: English (Langue : Anglais) Venue: THE FILM GALLERY, 43 rue du Faubourg Saint-Martin, 75010 Paris

The transfer of Seidel's award-winning experimental films into physical space has been explored extensively in recent years. Sculpture, architecture and even natural projection surfaces have been temporarily “overpainted” with projections, lights or lasers. But with new advances in machine learning, there comes an oversaturation, or even rigor mortis, when the moving image becomes fully accessible without any context. Right now machines are working through the history of humanity. Copyright dissolves; the distinction between original, imitation or inferior reproduction erodes. No origin, no responsibility, no clear direction - just a primordial soup that can be shaped into any form without challenging knowledge systems and hierarchies. In this silent but radical restructuring of entire industries, the artist becomes the template of a future digitally assembled from a multitude of fragments of the past.

Please note that the artist talk will be in English, followed by a conversation between Robert Seidel and Sabina Suru, an intermedia artist currently undertaking an artistic residency at Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris.

20 YEARS OF DIGITAL EXPERIMENTAL FILMS RETROSPECTIVE SCREENING AND Q&A WITH ROBERT SEIDEL

Friday, March 22nd, 8:30 pm, 2024 Admission: Regular rates apply *UGC, CIP, and Pass Culture cards accepted Venue: CINEMA L'ARCHIPEL,17 bd de Strasbourg, 75010 Paris

Twenty years ago, Robert Seidel’s award-winning work ‘_grau’ redefined the possibilities of experimental film in the digital age, using advanced 3D animation, physical simulation and medical data to create an emotional portrait of a car accident. It won several awards including Best Experimental Film at the Ottawa International Animation Festival and the Honorary Award at the Cologne KunstFilmBiennale and marked the beginning of a twenty-year career exploring the diverse formal possibilities of digital “moving paintings”. With works spanning film, video installation, large-scale projection, laser performances and AI experiments that draw audiences into fully abstract worlds and emotional feedback loops, Seidel’s retrospective offers audiences an insight into what it means to explore abstract imagery in the 21st century.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A (in English) with Robert Seidel. https://www.larchipelcinema.com/evenement/2135786-vendredi-22-mars-20h30-archipel-x-the-film-gallery-robert-seidel
