An “oasis in a film desert,” the artist-run Los Angeles Independent Film Oasis (1976–81) was a screening collective that fostered the presentation of experimental cinema in a city dominated by the film industry. This program in the SFMOMA Phyllis Wattis Theater centers on a selection of 16mm films — rarely shown in the Bay Area — by founding members, including Morgan Fisher, Roberta Friedman, Amy Halpern, Pat O’Neill, Susan Rosenfeld, Grahame Weinbren, David Wilson, and Diana Wilson. Presented in conjunction with the exhibition Pat O’Neill: Three Answers on view on Floor 7.

Introduced by Tanya Zimbardo, assistant curator of media arts at SFMOMA

Films include:

  • Amy Halpern, Invocation, 1982 and Filament (The Hands), 1972–75**
  • Morgan Fisher, Projection Instructions, 1976*
