Alchemy Film And Moving Image Festival 2016: Artists’ Filmmaking Symposium

The 2016 Alchemy Film and Moving Image Festival, Scotland’s international festival dedicated to experimental film and artists’ moving image, will open on Thursday 14th April with the Filmmaking Symposium; an unique event that in its past 3 years has proven to be immensely successful. Open to all, and aimed at both aspiring and established filmmakers or artists working within moving image, the Symposium features talks and presentations by revered filmmakers and leading industry figures.  It provides a rare opportunity to meet and mingle with a range of experts closely involved the making, funding, and distribution of experimental films and artists’ moving image, along with students and fans of the arts. This year’s high calibre of internationally recognized speakers that will share their insights and experience are:

Leighton Pierce (Los Angeles, USA)
Filmmaker and Dean of CalArts School of Film/Video
Leighton Pierce is an experimental filmmaker working with film, video, sound, and installation. Pierce’s work has been exhibited in major art museums and film festivals throughout the world, including The Whitney Biennial; Sundance Film Festival, San Francisco, New York, Tribeca, Ann Arbor, and Rotterdam film festivals, the Exploratorium, Montreal Museé d’Art Contemporaine, and The Sheldon Art Museum. Retrospectives of his works have been presented at venues including The New Zealand Film Festival, Lincoln Center, The Cinémathèque Française, Festival Nemo, the Pompidou Center in Paris, and at The Lisbon Biennale. He is currently Dean at the CalArts School of Film/Video.

Lucy Reynolds (London, UK)
Curator and course leader of the MRes: Moving Image at Central Saint Martins.
Lucy Reynolds is a lecturer and curator in artists' moving image. Her area of research focuses on expanded cinema and British avant-garde film of the 1970s. She is course leader for the MRes: Moving Image at Central Saint Martins and teaches the history and theory of artists' moving image at the University of Westminster, Goldsmiths College, LUX and the Arnolfini. She has presented talks on artists' film and video at arts venues across the UK. Her recent publishing includes Shadow Play in British Expanded Cinema, in Expanded Cinema, Afterall/Tate publications.

Madeleine Molyneaux (New York & Los Angeles, USA)
Director of Picture Palace Pictures, an international artist’ film Production Company.
Madeliene Molyneaux works with emerging and established artists across Europe and North America, developing, producing, and representing films, video projects, installations/exhibitions and transmedia work. She has worked on visual arts projects for Kevin Jerome Everson , Bill Morrison, K8 Hardy, David Jacobson, Phillip Warnell, Pierre Bismuth, Phil Collins, Gustav Deutsch and Possible Movements. As a curator and programmer, Madeleine has worked at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, Festival du nouveau Cinema, and is currently on the moderating team of the International Film Festival Rotterdam.

Steven Bode (London, UK)
Director of Film and Video Umbrella, a commissioning agency for artists’ film.
Steven Bode is Director of Film and Video Umbrella, Britain's main commissioners and producers of artists' moving-image work. He has initiated nearly 200 hundred different projects, including major works from internationally-acclaimed artists such as Duncan Campbell, Isaac Julien, Mark Leckey, Gillian Wearing, Jane & Louise Wilson and Tacita Dean. Alongside this commissioning activity, he has curated large-scale group exhibitions and written extensively about video, film and contemporary art for several international publications and artists' monographs.

Bryan Konefsky (New Mexico, USA)
Artistic director of Experiments in Cinema
Bryan Konefsky is a cultural worker dedicated to the advancement of un-dependent, experimental media arts. He teaches at the University of New Mexico and is artistic director of Experiments in Cinema. He is a panelist for the New Visions filmmaking awards, an adviser for Ann Arbor Film Festival, guest curator for the Southwest Gay and Lesbian Film Festival and juror for Videofest. Bryan guest lectures widely at universities and has published in a range of international journals. His own films have been presented at Blinding Light Cinema, Videoex, Erarta Museum, Paris Underground Film Festival, Cinema Ritrovato, Oslo Film Institute, European Media Arts Festival, Long Beach Museum of Art, Anthology Film Archives and Millennium Film Workshop.

All attendants of the Filmmakers Symposium will then be invited to the opening of a range of video installations situated around Hawick, including a guided walk by the participating artists. A light lunch is also included in the ticket price.
