Brzezinski, Michal

Michal Brzezinski, born in 1975, a graduate of film studies at the Media and Audiovisual Culture Department at the University of Lodz.  An artist and video theoretician, a specialist on the visual media, such as TV, DVD and the Internet. An organizer of video training workshops and author of a TV programme devoted to video. His work combines the tradition of video art and experimental cinema and is a reflection on the phenomenon of identity in the world of the new media. In order to define video art and describe its functioning in society, he introduces the notions of VIRUS-VIDEO or VIDEO-IDENTITY. brzeziñski.net art studio

    Michal Brzezinski is an artist faithful to the medium of video, who has been striving for a decade to restore the art of video to the position of experimental art and who has negated attempts at adapting and appropriating it to the role imposed by the context of the traditional visual arts. He attempts to discover new elements both in the montage and in visual aesthetics of this medium. The present exhibition constitutes another breakthrough in his creative output which has generated many a controversy so far. Since these controversies are not political but aesthetic in nature, his works are a far cry from scandal-seeking and populism. However, in the artistic context, this show is truly ‘volcanic’ and, following subsequent eruptions of Brzezinski’s ideas, the intellectual landscape is swept off the surface and the defining of a new aesthetic space commences.

    This year's summer workshops will broaden the cycle of presentations of PARAKINO. Practical activities organized by Michal Brzezinski and Arjon Dunnewind ( Dutch IMPAKT Festival director) will take place.  The structure of the workshops will be similar to the dialog of audiovisual presentations prepared by the moderators. There will be an opportunity to see the newest works promoted by organizations, awarded on festivals, as well as getting acquainted with history of experimental cinema within the help on particular works. System of esthetical references in which these works will appear will be a source for discussion and creation of works. Ways of reevaluating and sorting creative space, which are operated by European structures of organizations taking care about promotion of art, will be another field for discussion, and participants will have opportunity, by using their own audiovisual forms make their own answers, enriching this discourse of the contemporary art. They will also master practical knowledge about those dominant contexts.
