Stephanie Barber

Stephanie M.Barber is an American artist who, though having produced and shown work in many media, is best known as an experimental filmmaker and writer whose films include catalog, dogs, total power:dead dead dead, shipfilm and many other short films and videos.

Biography Her film and video work is most notable for the deconstructive elements of her (often) strangely narrative and poetic soundtracks and the tensions these create when married to her mysterious and painstakingly composed images (these latter often constructed from found films or still images and hyperreferential to their source medium).

Ms. Barber has had solo exhibitions of her film work at The Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Cinematheque, Chicago Filmmakers, Anthology Film Archives and many other museums, galleries and universities. Her film it fell possum was included in the Whitney Museum of American Art's exhibition, The American Century. Some of her films are distributed by Canyon Cinema.

Her book poems was published in 2006 by Bronze Skull Press and her recent book these here separated to see how they standing alone or the soundtrack to six films by stephanie barber'was published in May 2008 by Publishing Genius Press. Included in this book is her experimental essaythe inversion, transcription, evening track and attractor' (the soundtrack for the video of the same name) which was recently nominated for a Pushcart Prize. The Chicago Reader wrote 'Stephanie Barber . . . has one of the most original visions to emerge recently from the diverse experimental film scene. Deceptively simple at first, her work is unique in the way it alters and even suspends time.' and Bret McCabe at The Baltimore City Paper wrote Stephanie Barber's films '....can feel like highly formal exercises in film language made by a profoundly restless mind, playing image and sound off each other and forcing you to locate implied meanings on your own. Others are both silly and oddly engaging, involving puppets mundanely discussing pressing metaphysical concerns. And others calmly and almost imperceptibly sweep you up in the genuine breadth of their emotional wake.' She currently lives in Baltimore, MD USA.

Her lecture 'For a lawn poem' is published by Publishing Genius and her chapbook 'poems by s.barber' is available through Bronze Skull Press, which is run by the poet Roberto Harrison. Other pieces have been included in Crayon, Gam, The Shattered Wig Press, The Blue Canary and other journals and anthologies.

She has acted in David Robbins' The Ice Cream Social, ZeroTV's Milwaukee Show, the feature film Hamlet A.D.D., and Jennifer Montgomery's Threads of Belonging. She was also a member of the influential music/performance group XKS.
