From abstract to narrative, celluloid to digital, Black Box celebrates the diversity of experimental film from around the world. Since 2013 the strand also includes an expanded film performance event Black Box Live.

    Black Box is the regular experimental strand at Edinburgh International Film Festival, curated by Kim Knowles. It comprises four shorts programmes dealing with the body and technology, journeys and discoveries, ritual and transformation, and matters of the environment, and two feature films. In the context of the Festival’s 70th anniversary, Black Box revisits the 1970s with two retrospective screenings and a special event celebrating one of the most important periods in the history of the Festival.

    Last Call for Submissions for the 70th Edition of the Edinburgh International Film Festival.

    EIFF are still inviting experimental submissions for the Black Box strand, now in its 14th year. We accept short to medium length work on any format and particularly welcome films on 16mm or 35mm.

    Black Box is a distinctive section within the festival, which presents a diverse spectrum of experimental work from around the world. It is committed to supporting photochemical film and artisanal practice as well as innovations in the digital medium.

  • Black Box at Edinburgh International Film Festival 2015

    EIFF is inviting submissions for short and medium-length films for the Black Box experimental section. We support equally film and digital formats and encourage submissions on 16mm and 35mm. This year we are particularly interested in films that deal with the theme of either performance or the environment, although the selection is by no means limited to these areas.

    Black Box showcases work by both emerging and established filmmakers. The 2014 edition included Monica Savirón, Kevin Jerome Everson, Guillaume Callieau, Mara Mattuschka, Peter Snowdon, Jeanne Liotta, Laida Lertxundi, Deborah Stratman, Eve Heller, Dietmar Brehm, Kurdwin Ayub, Thorsten Fleisch, Dana Duff, Alexei Dmitriev, Jim Finn, Zachary Epcar, Brendan and Jeremy Smyth, Esther Urlus, Richard Tuhoy, Malena Szlam, Janis Crystal Lipzin, Billy Roisz, Mike Stolz, Paul Clipson, Martha Jurksaitis, and others ...

    Black Box Shorts 1: Commodification-Appropriation 27 June, 18:30h

    The films in this programme subtly underline the way capitalism infiltrates and defines the environments we inhabit and the images we consume. From real estate to pornography, and from Coca-Cola to Miley Cyrus, the works showcased here present idiosyncratic critiques of commodity culture and social alienation. The images of capitalism are reclaimed and reworked to form alternative readings and understandings of contemporary consumer society.

  • Black Box Live @ Edinburgh International Film Festival

    EIFF's experimental strand Black Box ventures outside the box for a second year of live expanded film performance. Multiple projector pieces combining analogue and digital material meet densely layered electronic and acoustic sounds. A veritable treat for the senses!

    Guillaume Cailleau (France) & Jan Slak (Slovenia)

    A sensuous combination of tangible sound and stereo film projection gradually increasing in speed, force and intensity. Alternating frames of color originating from two Super 8mm projectors combine with bass drum and snare, wrapping the pulsating and interfering frequencies of light into a vibrating human body. A transcendent analogue experience - physical, radical, handmade, and live.

    Black Box is EIFF's dedicated platform for showcasing experimental cinema from around the world. 2010 saw screenings of films by Tomonari Nishikawa, David Gatten, Robert Todd, Mike Hoolboom, Daichi Saito, Janis Crystal Lipzin, Thorsten Fleisch, Eileen Richardson and many others. BB particularly welcomes celluloid in all forms, shapes and sizes (except, sadly, 8mm)!

    The Edinburgh International Film Festival invites submissions for its experimental section 'Black Box'. The 64th EIFF will take place from 16 - 27 June 2010 in Edinburgh. The Festival is internationally regarded as a focus for discovery, a celebration of cinema, a centre of debate and a catalyst for new films. Black Box has been developing and expanding over the past few years and screens a wide variety of short and feature-length experimental works on both film and video.

    Last year's festival included films by Chris Kennedy, Kerry Laitala, Scott Nyerges, Antoni Pinent, Cecile Fontaine, Frederique Devaux, Ben Rivers, Marie Losier, Tomonari Nishikawa and Makino Takashi.     There are three ways to submit:

    Please note all submitted films should be no more than 12 months old by June 2010 and EIFF requires at least UK premiere status.
